Gunmen attack police checkpoint in North Sinai

Gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in Masaeed, Arish, North Sinai early Saturday.

A security source said the assailants managed to escape and heavy crossfire was heard after the attack.

Forces stationed around the broadcast building fired warning shots, sources said, adding that the incident left no casualties.

The Sinai Peninsula has witnessed a series of bloody attacks against police and army forces since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsy in July. Authorities blame Islamist extremists for the string of assaults.
