CAIRO: Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution on Sunday resumed investigations with Egypt’s former top auditor Hisham Genina over accusations of disrupting public peace and security through promoting false news about the size of corruption in government bodies, Al Ahram reported.
The investigation started last week after Genina; former Chairman of Egypt’s Central Auditing Organization (CAO) was summoned by the state Security Prosecution on Thursday.
This came after Genina on Tuesday appealed with the Administrative Judicial Court against a presidential decree to dismiss him from his post following the said accusations.
On March 28, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi issued a decree dismissing Geneina following the latter’s statement in December 2015 that “the volume of governmental corruption in the period between 2012 and 2015 has amounted 600 billion EGP ($75 billion.”
In response, Sisi has formed a specialized committee to probe into Genina’s claims.
The decree did not indicate the reasons for the dismissal of the country’s top auditor, but it came after the State Security Prosecution said that Geneina’s statement was groundless, according to Al Ahram.
The CAO monitors financial institutions and government bodies.
