Egypt probes African Champions League match riot

Egyptian authorities are probing a football match riot which left nine people injured on Saturday night in the Cairo Stadium, Egyptian media reported on Monday.

Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has ordered a probe into the accident, the Egyptian Gazette newspaper said.

In a Facebook message, the military council condemned the thuggery and vandalism acts which it said distorted Egypt’s reputation.

Angry home fans stormed into the pitch at the stadium during an African Champions League match between Egypt’s Zamalek and a Tunisian team, after a goal by the Egyptian team was disallowed for offside. The fans forced the Algerian referee to leave. The game was then abandoned.

Egypt’s Ministry of Health officials said nine people were injured in the incident, according to the report.

Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf offered an apology to Tunisia and the Tunisia team in a TV interview on Saturday.

The Egyptian Football Association said talks will be held to discuss how to stage the remaining games of the competition.
