Two collisions between packed minibuses and trucks killed 24 people in Egypt on Wednesday, police said.
In the first accident, a truck driver lost control of his vehicle after a tire blew out and slammed into a minibus on the Cairo-Alexandria highway just north of the capital. Twelve people were killed and four were injured, a police official said.
A similar collision in the northern province of Beheira killed 10 people and injured five others, said another police official.
The police officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Highway accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor law enforcement. An estimated 6,000 people die in car accidents annually.
