Blasts bring down electricity pylons in al-Sharqiya

Four electricity pylons collapsed following several blasts in Egypt’s al-Sharqiya governorate, north-east of Cairo, the state owned MENA news agency reported Thursday.

No casualties were reported, but power outages hit some areas supplied by these units.

Unknown assailants planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the pylon bases near Zagazig and Qenayat towns. They detonated almost simultaneously.

Al-Sharqiya power network general manager Hamdi Metwalli said bombs were planted at nine electricity pylons in the governorate over the past 24 hours.

They include five in the industrial 10th of Ramadan City and four in Zagazig and Qenayat, he said.

The damage is estimated at 9 million Egyptian pounds ($1.2 million), he said.

Police are investigating the incidents.
