Bus driver accused of killing GUC student released

A bus driver accused of killing a student at the German University in Cairo (GUC) was released from police custody pending investigations, Youm7 reported.

Yara Tareq, a first year engineering student, was killed Monday after a university bus ran her over; university students have announced a strike calling for holding the perpetrator accountable.

The Heliopolis Misdemeanor Court ordered the release of the driver after students testified that the university administration, not the driver, is responsible for Yara’s death.

They said Yara was running to catch another bus to head home, but fell and a bus struck her. They added that the bus driver was moving in the area which is allocated for bus movement.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students protested Thursday outside the university president’s office, where the teaching staff was holding an emergency meeting to discuss Yara’s case. They announced the continuation of their protest and called for postponing the academic year until the university is secure and fully-equipped ambulances and increased parking spaces for buses are provided.
