Cairo promises full transparency to IAEA

Cairo plans to continue its transparent cooperation with the U.N.’s nuclear agency after plans for a nuclear reactor were approved, a minister said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency announced during the weekend that it backed plans announced in 2007 to build a nuclear power plant in Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast.

Cairo plans to build four nuclear power reactors by 2025. The first could go on stream as early as 2019.

Hassan Younis, the Egyptian electricity and energy minister, pledged to continue providing full cooperation with IAEA protocols during Cairo’s nuclear work, reports Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm.

He said he would discuss his plans during meetings in Austria with delegates from the IAEA. He said more than 60 engineers would begin training in Russia, the United States, South Korea and France on nuclear activity.

Younis said he would invite international bidders to the Egyptian nuclear sector by the end of the year.
