An Egyptian court has blocked an appeal by ousted President Hosni Mubarak , allowing prosecutors to seize his billions of dollars that he had illegally transferred during his nearly 30 years of reign.
Judge Makram Awad rejected a request for more time made by Mubarak’s lawyers, and rejected the appeal.
Anti-Mubarak protesters have pushed for a criminal investigation, and criminal trial against him, and his family members. This is likely to take place in the near future, the Daily Mail reports.
The former dictator had stepped down on February 11 after 18 days of protests across Egypt demanding his removal from office.
Mubarak and his family members have been banned from travelling abroad, but it is believed that they had stored large amounts of money while in power.
Meanwhile, judicial officials have said although there are no official figures on the total amount possessed by Mubarak and his family, estimates run into billions. Much of the money is believed to be held abroad.
On February 20, Egypt’s Attorney General had frozen Mubarak’s assets and ordered the family’s funds to be seized eight days later. The 82-year-old ousted leader is believed to have turned a blind eye to the corruption by his family members.
