An Egyptian judge ordered 11 Tunisians jailed on Tuesday, after they were charged with attacking police and damaging property following the weekend defeat of a Tunisian football club in Cairo, security sources said.
It was unclear how long they would be held for.
The violence unfolded during the end tail of Sunday’s heated African Champion’s League football match.
Security was in place to prevent fans from rioting, but 11 policemen nevertheless landed in hospital with injuries after clashes broke out.
Images on Egyptian television showed a mob of angry Tunisian fans beating riot police, vandalising the stadium by ripping out chairs and throwing fireworks into the pitch at Cairo Stadium.
The incident took place after Egypt’s Al-Ahly beat Tunisia’s Esperance 2-1. The two teams are expected to go head-to-head again in Tunis on October 16.
In a related incident, Egyptian police arrested another two Tunisians as they boarded a plane out of Cairo airport on charges of participating in Sunday’s violence.
