Egypt protesters capture officer, two police vehicles

Egyptian protesters, after being attacked by police, captured a top officer and two police armored carriers, taking the vehicles to Tahrir Square where thousands of protesters in the iconic square celebrated as the vehicles were destroyed and set ablaze.

In what appears to be an escalation of violence, a march from Cairo’s Sayeda Zeinab area near the central square was initially allowed to pass police lines on the Cairo Corniche near Tahrir, but as they went through, the police attacked the surrounded protesters.

Activists have reported police chasing and beating protesters in the nearby Garden City area of Cairo near the US and British embassies.

The APC attacked the protesters, running over one of the protesters, who has been taken to a local hospital for emergency care. The protesters were then enraged and attacked the vehicle, stealing it and driving it to Tahrir.

One woman also reported that as the protesters passed, women in the march were sexually harassed.
