Egypt updates

1. More than 50 armoured vehicles and tanks have arrived at the Media Production City (MPC) in Cairo to secure it ahead of protests. Military officials have indicated that the move is to ensure that media outlets are able to work with freedom and are not threatened by any violence.The MPC houses the majority of private Egyptian television and radio providers.

2. A press conference held by the Tamarod (Rebellion) has outlined their demands for the June 30 protest. The demands include dissolving the Islamist-dominated Shura Council (Upper house parliament), placing the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court as temporary President until new elections, and forming a transitional government for six months that would be followed by elections that are supervised by international monitors as to avoid rigging. Members of Tamarod have also stated that they will watch/listen to President Morsi’s speech at Tahrir Square.

3. Reports indicate that 10 have been injured in clashes in Tahrir square between demonstrators and unknown individuals. Three of the injured have been rushed to hospital in serious conditions.

4. Gunmen in the Sinai have kidnapped an injured police officer from inside an ambulance that was on the way to Sharm El Sheikh’s International hospital from St. Catherine. The ambulance was forced to the side of the road after gunmen attacked it, making the driver and the paramedic flee before kidnapping the officer.

5. The Presidential Elections Committee has delayed its decision on Ahmed Shafik’s case that last year’s election results were rigged in favour of President Morsi. The session was delayed as the brother of the court’s President passed away. The results will instead be announced tomorrow at 3pm.
