Egypt’s Sisi tours new administrative capital, Suez Canal tunnels

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi toured the new administrative capital on Friday morning, as well as tunnels under-construction on the Suez Canal.

El-Sisi was inspecting the latest updates at both sites, according to a brief statement by his spokesman Bassam Rady.

At the new capital, El-Sisi also toured at the El-Fattah El-Alim Mosque and the Nativity of Christ Cathedral.

The under-construction capital, announced in March 2015, is part of the government’s plan to expand urban areas to deal with the country’s rapid population growth rate and improve the nation’s infrastructure.

Located some 40km east of Cairo, the new city is intended to draw a population of 7 million people in its first phase.

In December 2017 El-Sisi inaugurated several development projects in the East Suez Canal development zone in northern Ismailia, including tunnels to facilitate commercial and civilian access to Sinai and the East Suez Canal Development Zone.

The East Suez Canal development project, which is part of the larger Suez Canal development plan, was launched in 2015. The project aims to develop major residential and industrial centres in the governorate of Ismailia.
