Eleven people killed in Cairo road pile-up

Eleven people were killed early Friday in a road pile-up south of Cairo, according to police.

They blamed the mishap on a private car, which swerved from the route to avoid a truck and crashed into other vehicles on the Ring Road, which encircles the Egyptian capital.

The car fell off the road barrier in Bashteel near Cairo after ploughing into locals, who were waiting for taxis on the side of the road, police added. Eighteen others were injured in the accident, which is one of the worst in Egypt.

In December 2008, a passenger bus plunged into an irrigation canal in Minya, some 210km south of Cairo, leaving 57 dead.

Road crashes in Egypt are among the highest in the world due to poor roads and driving reckless. Around 6,000 are killed annually in road accidents in this country of 80 million.

Two years ago, the Egyptian authorities enforced a new traffic code involving tougher penalties. But the law has brought about a slight improvement in road behaviour, according to observers.
