Unknown attackers stormed the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s political party in Fayoum at dawn Tuesday, looting and damaging its contents amid clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsy.
Forty people were injured during the violence, according to a medical source in Fayoum Public Hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported that residents of Fayoum’s al-Ramad neighborhood, where the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) is located, were surprised to see dozens of unidentified young men riding motorcycles towards the building, before storming and ransacking it.
Some assailants seized documents and papers from inside, they said.
In al-Massala Sqaure, dozens of opponents protested outside the FJP headquarters on Monday evening. Street violence erupted when pro and anti-government demonstrators threw stones.
Clashes continued until dawn on Tuesday resulting in 40 injuries from both sides, the medical source said.
The same source added that injured persons had been transferred to Fayoum hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.
The police intervened to stop the clashes, using tear gas, however hit-and-run skirmishes continued outside the FJP building and Massala Square.
