The Egyptian league resumed Wednesday after a two-month break following the country’s domestic unrest, with five games played without incidents.
The country’s football federation last week last week decided to go ahead with the resumption despite a violent riot by fans at an African Champions League game in Cairo the previous weekend. There was heavy security at all five league games, but a peaceful atmosphere.
Al Ahly climbed to third place by beating Itthad Al Shortah 2-1. Smouha and El Gounah also picked up victories, while there were 1-1 draws in Ismaily-Petrojet and El Geish-El Masry.
The Egyptian league was postponed in early February during the protests that eventually led to the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak.
