Former Egyptian President Mubarak not guilty of protester murder – judge

Ex-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been found not guilty of the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ousted him, Egyptian media reported. However, his release is dependent on the outcome of other charges against him.

A Cairo judge ruled that Mubarak was not complicit in the killing of activists during the early-2011 uprising. The court also considered an appeal by the former president’s attorney to release him from detention. Mubarak’s lawyer argued that he has already spent the maximum period of time in custody for a term of temporary detention.

Mubarak also faces a number of other charges, including embezzlement, which the judge ruled must be dealt with before the ex-President may be released.

The former leader’s retrial was postponed on Saturday after the Judge presiding over the case recused himself, referring the affair to another court, claiming he did not want to “embarrass” himself. The announcement provoked outrage and clashes both inside and outside the courtroom.
