Oil tanker impounded for damaging Internet cable

The Alexandria First Instance Court on Monday ordered the seizure of a foreign oil tanker for damaging the international Internet cable 19 kilometers off the Abu Talat shore in Amiriya.

Investigation revealed that the tanker, B Elephant, carrying the Marshall Islands flag, damaged the cable while passing through the international cable area, despite a warning received by the captain.

Prosecutors have requested information about the value of the damages resulting from cutting the cable, the names of the owner of the ship and the captain to be summoned, and the impoundment of the tanker.

Internet services in Egypt were negatively affected due to the accident, returning to full capacity on Friday. Authorities have stated that alternative feeds are in use.
