The prosecutor general canceled an order made by the Matay village prosecutor in Minya Governorate, Hussein Anany, that sentenced a man to 80 lashes for being found drunk and possession 25 grams of hashish, a Public Prosecution spokesperson said.
“Anany was referred to the Judicial Inspection Authority to find out the legal text he based his order on,” Hifnawy told Al-Hayat satellite channel Sunday.
Anany had sentenced Mohamed Ragab, a 30-year-old Musicians Syndicate employee, to 80 lashes for being found drunk and possessing drugs.
The prosecutor also assigned a policeman to carry out the sentence in accordance with a Quranic verse and Sharia, which penalizes drunkards with 80 lashes. Ragab would have then been released.
