Three Egyptian children were injured on Wednesday when an explosive device they found near the Giza Pyramids went off, officials told AFP.
The three had found the device in the desert and not knowing what it was, carried it back to the Pyramids and tried to open it, thinking there might be treasure inside, one security official said.
“The explosive device was a shell left over from the the war,” he said, adding that there were no tourists in the area at the time.
“They found the device and started playing with it. It exploded, wounding the three. One boy lost part of his arm,” Ali al-Asfar, the head of the Giza plateau told AFP.
The three have been taken to hospital and are in stable condition, Asfar said.
