UK ban on travel to Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh should be lifted: British MP

British member of parliament Stephen Timms said Saturday that the Egyptian-British Parliamentary Friendship Association supports that a travel ban imposed on the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh be lifted.

The comments by Timms came during a meeting with Egyptian Minister of Tourism Rania El-Mashaat, who is currently in the UK attending a meeting of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which works to raise awareness of travel and tourism as one of the world’s largest industries.

In 2015, a number of European countries, including the UK, introduced restrictions on flights to Sharm El-Sheikh over security concerns after a Russian passenger jet crashed in Sinai, killing 224 people, most of whom were holidaymakers.

Timms is the elected president of the Egyptian-British Parliamentary Friendship Association.

During his meeting with Mashaat in London, Timms highlighted the desire of British tourists to visit Egypt, especially Sharm El-Sheikh.

He said that the association is working inside the House of Commons and the House of Lords to pressure the British government to lift Sharm El-Sheikh travel ban.
