Media reports indicate that Egyptian Security Forces in the Sinai have elevated their level of alert for the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, October 25 – 29. This state of alert, which also includes south Sinai and Sharm al-Sheikh, appears to be connected to concern over possible terrorist attacks in response to a recent Israeli airstrike in Gaza. Tourists and tourist facilities have been targeted in south Sinai in the past. While the Embassy maintains a strict travel policy in regard to the Sinai, this suggestion of threat to the South and possibly Sharm al-Sheikh warrants a higher level of attention by employees traveling to Sharm al-Sheikh. Specifically, employees traveling to Sharm al-Sheikh over this period should avoid unsecured venues, such as bazaars or shopping malls and night clubs/restaurants that may cater to foreign tourists. Be cognizant of your surroundings, avoid unsecured large crowds and report any suspicious activity.
