Who is Egypt’s new interim president Adly Mansour?

382541_190115301154719_1928501615_nIn response to public demand, Egypt’s military leader AbdelFattah ElSissy ousted President Mohamed Morsi after one year in office and appointed Adly Mansour as the interim president, vowing that the Supreme Council of Armed Forces will not play a political role in the future.

Egypt had an interim president back in 1981 for eight days, after former president Mohamed Anwar Sadat was shot and right before ousted president Mohamed Hosni Mubarak was elected.

Born in 1945, Mansour graduated from the Faculty of Law at Cairo University in 1967 and was appointed as an assistant delegate at the State Council. He then acquired a Master’s degree in Law and in Administrative Sciences from the former mentioned university.

Later he became Vice-President of the State Council. He also worked as a legal advisor to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice, before becoming the Deputy Chief of Egypt’s Constitutional Court in 1992.

Mansour was also a consultant for the Ministry of Trade in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The top judge was appointed as the Chief of the Constitutional Court effective on the 30th of June 2013, after former head Maher ElBeheiry retired.
