Two natural gas lines exploded Friday in the 6 October City in Giza after unknown assailants planted two bombs underneath, Youm7 reported.
The two separate explosions took place during the early hours of the day when residents were shocked with a loud booming noise resulted when the bombs went off.
Afterwards, residents informed civil protection forces, which immediately arrived at scene and contained the situation. Bomb squad and detectives also headed to the scene to carry out investigations and comb the area for any potential bombs.
Anonymous sources told Youm7 that the first blast occurred at 3:44 am in the tenth district in the city, while the second was detonated by a phone call at 3:55 am in the city’s eleventh district.
The source added that natural gas emergency team is now working on the maintenance of the damaged line.
Last month, a gas pipeline in Al-Arish exploded for the 28th time.
Since the 2011 Egyptian revolution, several attacks took place to a natural gas pipeline in Al-Arish, exporting gas to Jordan and to another underwater pipeline to Israel. After months of attacks on the pipeline, gas supply to Israel was stopped and that to Jordan was resumed but at lower rate.
Public utilities, security personnel and installations have also been target to violent acts by unknown assailants. Militant groups, including Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis and the newly founded ‘Popular Resistance’ claimed responsibility for some attacks.
The attacks have witnessed escalation since the ouster of the President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
The Northern tip of the Sinai Peninsula has been witnessing the largest share of such attacks, which targeted army and police forces; an intensified security campaign is currently taking place to clear the area from militants.
