3 injured in downtown blast

Three people were injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off in downtown Cairo on Saturday morning.

Sami Youssef, director of the general administration of civil protection, told state-run news agency MENA that the IED was discovered by street sweepers cleaning underneath Ghamra Bridge. It exploded as soon as it was discovered.

Security forces have intensified their measures in reaction to repeated militant attacks that target army and police officials in North Sinai, which rose significantly since the military ouster of former President Mohamed Mursi last year. The attacks soon expanded to other areas of the country, including the capital.

An explosion occurred in the vicinity of Cairo University on October 22, leaving at least 10 injured.
