Kiwi journalist detained in Egypt released

A Kiwi journalist arrested by Egyptian police near the scene of violent protests in Cairo has been released.

Campbell MacDiarmid, who works for Egypt’s Business Today magazine, was reportedly beaten and accused of being a spy.

He was held at a police station in the downtown suburb of Dokki along with British freelance journalist Adam Ramsey.

Friends and colleagues of both MacDiarmid and Ramsey had been concerned for their safety.

Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds injured in Egypt following clashes between the army and supporters of former president Mohammed Morsi.

MacDiarmid’s detention came five weeks after Al Jazeera’s Wayne Hay was arrested along with three others while covering a protest in Cairo.

MacDiarmid tweeted after his release that he was “home safe” and thanked colleagues for their concern.

Ramsey also tweeted his thanks after his release: “I was never in any real trouble long term. Even though I apparently look Egyptian, I’m not. Feel for the poor b******s who are still there.”

Cairo-based journalist Bel Trew sparked concern for MacDiarmid’s safety after she tweeted:

Help keep Expat Cairo independent. If you value our services any contribution towards our costs would be greatly appreciated.
