Azhar campus manager sentenced to 10 years for mass food poisoning

A misdemeanor court sentenced the campus manager of Al-Azhar University to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for a mass food poisoning incident that took place earlier this year.

The court also sentenced the kitchen manager and eight chefs to 10 years and L.E. 10,000 bail, a judicial source said.

Over 500 students were diagnosed with food poisoning in April due to bad food they had at the campus’s cafeteria, only two weeks after about 160 cases of food poisoning were also reported on campus.

Top Azhar Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb had ordered investigations into the incident while students gathered to protest the university’s poor quality of meals.
