Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics said on Friday that 26.3 percent of Egypt’s population lives in poverty.

The rural parts of Upper Egypt are the most impoverished areas as 49 percent of their population cannot provide their basic needs of food.

The overall unemployment rate in Egypt has reached 13.2 percent, the agency said in a statement.

Unemployment is higher among women at 24.2 percent.
