Alleged Israel spy ring referred to criminal court

The Supreme State Security Prosecution service set 5 February as the date for beginning the criminial trial of three Egyptians and five Israelis over charges of forming a spy ring operating in favor of Israel, local press reports said.

The suspects are facing charges of espionage and providing a “foreign entity” with information deemed sensitive to the country’s national security, though the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

The Israeli defendants are still at large.

Egypt and Israel signed the Camp David Accords in 1979, ending the state of war that ignited in 1967.
