Blast kills civilian north of Cairo

A bomb exploded late Saturday in a road tunnel in the Nile Delta governorate of Sharqiya, killing one person, in the latest of a wave of bombings across the country, state news agency MENA said.

The blast in Al-Shabab tunnel in the city centre killed a  67-year-old man driving by the bomb.  His body was charred and his car smashed.

MENA earlier reported that the explosion was caused by a car bomb and that two were killed.

Bombings and shootings by militants have become commonplace since the 2013 removal of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against his year in office and a crackdown on his supporters. Hundreds have been killed as a result of the attacks which have mainly targeted security forces. Civilians have also  been caught in the violence.
