Breaking News: Australian Al Jazeera journalist will be deported from Egypt – MENA

Australian journalist Peter Greste will be deported to Australia on Sunday afternoon, state-run MENA cited an official as saying.

According to MENA the decision comes after the approval of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The source said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry coordinated with the Australian Embassy to book Greste a flight to Sydney.

Greste is one of three Al Jazeera journalists sentenced to seven years in prison on June 23 on charges of defaming Egypt and spreading false news in the case known as the “Marriott Cell”.

The two other detained journalists are producer Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, who was sentenced to an additional three years for arms possession.

A retrial was ordered last month on the grounds of procedural errors.
