Lieutenant colonel Mohammed Bendari, supervisor at Cairo Traffic Directorate, told Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website that Tahrir Square has been closed since early Friday morning.
Bendari confirmed that other Cairo routes are calm, witnessing a smooth traffic flow.
He also mentioned that a number of police missions are patrolling Cairo’s streets, to make sure that “gatherings or marches are not blocking roads” he said.
A number of political forces including 6 April, The Popular Socialist Alliance and Strong Egypt Parties and others called for protests, 5 December, in Tahrir Square.
The protests come in rejection to Saturday’s verdict that acquitted Mubarak, his sons, business tycoon Hussein Salem and top security aides of charges of killing protesters and corruption.
