Canadian Ambassador meets Egypt`s prosecutor over jailed Canadian Al-Jazeera Journalist, Fahmy

Canadian Ambassador to Egypt Ferry de Kerckhove will meet Egypt`s general prosecutor Hisham Barakat on Wednesday over Egyptian-Canadian jailed Al-Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy.

Kerckhove, along with a Canadian delegation, are meeting Barakat to discuss legal procedures that should be taken for Fahmy’s release and deportation.

The three Al Jazeera journalists were arrested in December 2013 and later sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on charges of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi hails.

They were detained for more than 400 days pending trial on charges that include aiding a terrorist group.

Early February, Fahmy gave up his Egyptian citizenship, paving the way for his release and deportation under a recent presidential decree issued by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

El-Sisi`s decree authorises non-Egyptian defendants on trial or convicts to be sent to their home countries to be tried or serve their sentences. Australian Peter Gretse, one of the three Jailed Al Jazeera journalists, has already been deported to his homeland according to the newly passed law.

The remaining defendant in the case is Egyptian journalist Baher Mohamed who is set to remain behind bars after the release of his colleagues.

Mohamed said earlier that he will not give up his Egyptian nationality in an attempt to be freed as he believes in the integrity of the Egyptian judiciary.
