Egypt bans tuk-tuks in central Cairo

The governor of Cairo banned on Wednesday the passage of tuk-tuks through central Cairo’s streets, issuing a fine of 1500 Egyptian pounds for whoever violates the ban.

The decision encompasses the districts of western Cairo, Azbakeya, Abdeen, Moski, Waili, Bab al-Shaeriya, Boulak Abul Ela and downtown Cairo, as per a statement reported by state television.

The authorities will confiscate the vehicle of whoever violates the decision until they pay the fine and sign a declaration vowing not to commit the violation again.

Road accidents are a common occurrence in Egypt, being among the prime causes of death in the Arab world’s most populous country.
