Egypt completes investigation into death of two Czechs

The Egyptian authorities have completed the investigation into the case of two Czechs, a mother and her daughter, who died of poisoning in the Egyptian seaside resort of Hurghada in July 2013, Czech Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Johana Grohova confirmed to CTK Wednesday.

She referred to unofficial information from Egypt.

However, the results of the investigation are not available yet, she added.

The Czech woman, aged 36, and her eight-year-old daughter died of the poisoning by an unknown substance in their hotel room in Hurghada. They were found by the husband who said all of them had suffered from stomach problems.

The food poisoning version was challenged by the director of the Hurghada hospital who said the victims’ stomach had been harmed by a strong poison.

Egypt refused to allow the husband and father Petr Kramny leave for the Czech Republic for three months as he was a witness. He was not accused eventually and returned to the Czech Republic on October 31.

“We have unofficial information saying the case has been completed by the Egyptian authorities. Nevertheless we have not received an official report from the Egyptian Prosecutor’s Office yet in spite of our urging,” Grohova told CTK.

Consequently, it is not known whether someone was accused in the case or whether the case was shelved.

It has been difficult to obtain information from Egyptian authorities since the Czech Republic and Egypt have not signed an agreement on bilateral cooperation in similar cases.

Grohova added that the ministry would keep asking the Egyptian prosecutor’s office for the investigation’s official results.

Media have reported that apart from Kramny, several hotel employees were suspected in the case.

The Czech police do not have any details about the investigation’s results either, regional police spokeswoman Gabriela Holcakova told the Tyden.cz server.
