Egypt court overturns death sentence, orders retrial for 5 terror suspects

Egypt’s Court of Cassation overturned on Tuesday death sentences and ordered a retrial for five defendants accused of forming a terrorist cell affiliated with the banned Muslim Brotherhood organisation in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura.

A Mansoura criminal court had convicted the defendants in March 2015.

The defendants were charged with forming a terrorist cell in 2013 and plotting to assassinate opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Last week, the Court of Cassation also overturned death sentences and ordered a retrial for four defendants accused of belonging to a Brotherhood terrorist cell in Tanta and Alexandria.

The Brotherhood was designated a terrorist group in December 2013 following the July uprising that toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

The Brotherhood has repeatedly denied involvement in violence or terrorist activities.
