Egypt elections to continue even with one candidate – PEC

Egypt’s presidential elections will continue even if there is only one candidate in the race, an official from the Presidential Elections Commission said.

The doors for registration to run for presidency closed on Sunday and the PEC announced that only former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi will be running the race.

Egypt will vote for a new president on May 26 and 27.

Wael Shebl, a senior member in the PEC, told Aswat Masriya on Monday that the elections will continue even if there is only one candidate, but he must receive at least 5 percent of the vote.

There are 54 million eligible voters in Egypt.
