The National Coalition for Supporting Legitimacy has called for protests to take place on Tuesday to renounce the “Coup’s severe aggression on universities and student arrests.”
The coalition is an Islamist alliance founded in support of deposed President Mohamed Mursi, who was ousted by the military in July following mass protests against his rule.
Many universities in Egypt have seen recurring protests staged by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, which Mursi hails from, against his ouster and the crackdown on its leading members.
Several clashes have erupted between students and security forces following protests called for by the coalition, especially in Azhar and Cairo universities.
The Islamist coalition called on students to “resume their peaceful creative revolution and revive the memory of martyrs,” in a statement issued Monday.
Supporters of the deposed president have been staging regular protests against what they describe as a “coup against legitimacy.”
