Egypt’s political digest June 18: Cairo Court hands down ruling against Morsi over ‘spying for Qatar’ charge

Cairo Court hands down ruling against Morsi over ‘spying for Qatar’ charge

A Cairo Criminal Court, held in Police Academy, will hand down Saturday its ruling in the trial of former president Mohamed Morsi and ten  members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group over charges of spying for Qatar.

On May 7, six other defendants were sentenced to death; their files has referred to Grand Mufti for religious opinion. The referral is a fixed procedure in cases of death penalties, although his opinion is only advisory and not abiding. The whole 17 defendants faced charges of “leaking confidential documents of the state’s national security and Egyptian armed forces to Qatari T.V. channel of Al-Jazeera” during Morsi’s one-year tenure.
