Egypt’s Sisi mandates Industry Minister to exercise some presidency powers

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a decree on Thursday giving newly- appointed Trade and Industry Minister Tarek Kabil some of his powers, as he headed to the New York to attend the 70th US General Assembly meeting.

The decree gave Kabil the right to exercise presidential powers outlined in Articles 1 and 3 of the law regulating and promoting industrial activity in Egypt, reported state-run MENA news agency.

Article 1 prohibits the establishment, enlargment or change of activity or location of an industrial plant without a license from the Ministry of Industry and the approval of a presidential committee.

The committee would base its decision on the state’s economic and social development plans.

Article 3 gives the president the power to form a committee of concerned ministries to decide on revoking a plant’s license.

Kabil replaced the former Minister of Trade and Industry Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour less than one week ago.

He was sworn in on Sept. 19 to join the new cabinet headed by former Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail.
