Ex-Al-Ahram CEO detained for 15 days for embezzlement charges

The Cairo Appeals Court on Sunday ordered 15 days’ detention to former Al-Ahram CEO Abdel-Fattah El-Gebaly on charges of “embezzling and abating the embezzlement” of LE500 million ($70 million) while chairman of Egypt’s largest state-run news organisation.

Earlier in the day, journalist and writer Samir Ragab turned himself in to authorities at Cairo Airport for embezzlement charges. Following questioning, the illicit gain apparatus set his bail at LE1 million ($140,000). Ragab was the former CEO of the state-run Tahrir Publishing, which publishes the daily El-Gomhouriya.
