Latest security news from the American Embassy.

Representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) have announced through local media their intention to organize protests this Friday, November 15. Information suggests that MB supporters are being directed to assemble in public squares throughout the country, likely beginning after mid-day prayers. While there is no indication that the demonstrations will not be peaceful, violent clashes could occur. With Tuesday November 19th identified as a day of possible protests over the two-year anniversary of the Mohammad Mahmoud Square clashes (Egypt also hosts a World Cup qualifying soccer match on the same day), there is some suggestion that protestors, to include the Muslim Brotherhood and youth groups, may also attempt to establish a continuous presence in public squares leading up to Tuesday.

In response to the potential for weekend demonstrations, U.S. citizens are advised to raise their level of security awareness when moving within Cairo and Alexandria. Areas of particular concern are public squares, such as Tahrir, Nadha, and Rabaa Addawiya in Cairo and Sede Beshr in Alexandria.

As a matter of general practice, U.S. citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Egypt are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.
