Life in prison for three female Muslim Brotherhood “supporters”

A Cairo court sentenced on Wednesday three women to life in prison for committing acts of violence following the forcible dispersal of two Pro-Mohamed Mursi sit-ins last August.

The three women are believed to be supporters of Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood. Brotherhood supporters have been organising protests nationwide since the former President’s military ouster on July 3, 2013.

They were charged with possession of unlicensed weapons, inciting violence, stalling state institutions and joining a banned organisation.

Security forces dispersed two pro-Mursi sit-ins on August 14, 2013, leaving behind at least 648 killed, according to official figures.

The dispersal of the sit-ins was described by international watchdog Human Rights Watch as “the most serious incident of mass unlawful killings in modern Egyptian history.”
