Over 100 people have been hospitalised with food poising in Assiut governorate after eating food provided by a charity.
The victims, residing in Assiut’s Manfalout, were given a meal of chicken, rice and water to break their fast on the second day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Under-secretary at the ministry of health Ahmed Abdel-Hamid told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that 100 people were receiving treatment in Manfalout Central Hospital, while eight patients in a critical condition had been transferred to Assiut University Hospital.
Abdel-Hamid said the food could have been spoiled because of the heat.
Samples have been taken to a lab to determine the cause of the poisoning, Abdel-Hamid added.
Legal steps have been taken and a report has been filed with the prosecution to find out the source of the meals.
