Unidentified armed men used portable rocket launchers to attack four military checkpoints in Rafah and Al-Arish in Egypt’s North Sinai late Friday, Al-Ahram’s Arabic-language news portal reports.
The militants also opened heavy fire at Rafah city council building. None of the militants have been arrested.
The exact number of injured military personnel is stil unknown and no deaths have been reported.
The Sinai Peninsula has witnessed increasing confrontations between militants and Egyptian army forces since the ouster of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July. After president Hosni Mubarak was ousted on 11 February 2011, the area also saw militant attacks on gas pipelines.
Jihadist groups are centralised in Sinai and are believed to be wreaking havoc in protest over the ouster of Islamist president Morsi.
Millions came out on the year anniversary of his inauguration in a sign of withdrawal of confidence in the president and the army responded by forging a political roadmap that replaced the Brotherhood-fielded Morsi with an interim President Adly Mansour, head judge of Egypt’s High Court.
