Moderate magnitude earthquake felt in Egypt

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea during the early hours of Monday morning, though no damages were reported.

The head of the Jordanian Earthquake Observatory Mahmoud Al-Qaryoti said the first quake struck at 4.46 AM, 13 kilometres south of the Gulf of Aqaba, state news agency MENA reported.

On Twitter, #earthquake in Arabic was trending.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Cairo and Suez by some people, assistant researcher at the national earthquakes network Walid Farid told Ahram Arabic website.

Farid said that the aftershocks – earthquakes with a small magnitude – are being monitored and would not be felt by people.

AFP reported that the earthquake hit 25 kilometres north-east of the Dahab resort in South Sinai.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, an independent scientific organisation that monitors earthquakes, said the area where the earthquake was felt has approximately 10 million inhabitants.
