National council launches campaign against child marriage

Secretary General of the National Council of Motherhood and Childhood Aza al-Ashmawy said the council is to launch a social campaign to combat child marriage, in a Friday statement to Youm7.

She added that the council exerted efforts since 2009 to combat child marriage and that these efforts led to a change in governmental policies. Ashmawy cited the fatwa issued by Dar al-Iftaa to ban child marriage as evidence of progress.

The secretary general said their campaign aims spur the creation of new legislation to combat the phenomena, in line with the constitution.

The campaign, which will be held in cooperation with the Public Union of Civil Institutions, also emphasizes the role of marginalized and low-income communities in fighting child marriage.
