Policeman killed, 2 injured, public utilities bombed in several governorates

The early hours of Wednesday witnessed several attacks in Egypt, resulting in one death, a number of injuries and sabotage of public utilities.

A low-ranking policeman was killed leaving a mosque after the Dawn Prayer Wednesday in the Delta governorate of Menoufia. The Imam of the mosque, who was accompanying the victim, told the police that anonymous assailants fired at the policeman and escaped after 11 bullets penetrated the body, according to Youm7.

Gunmen shot at two military conscripts guarding a goods train in Bani Sweif, Upper Egypt, injuring the couple and fleeing the scene. The guards are being treated at Bani Sweif Public Hospital, Youm7 reported.

An electric tower collapsed after explosive devices planted beneath it detonated early Wednesday in Fayoum, south west of Cairo. In Sharqia, the Delta, a power transformer was bombed on a main public road, Youm7 reported. The unknown perpetrators had planted an explosive device inside the transformer.

Public utilities and services have often been targeted since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, inflicting losses of millions of pounds on the government. Dozens of electric towers, cell phone towers, power transformers, water plants, public buses and other services have been sabotaged.
