Egyptian presidency spokesperson Alaa Youssef denied that a suspected assassination plot is the reason President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi did not attend the Arab Summit in Mauritania.
Youssef told Daily News Egypt on Monday that the report published by private newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm was “not true”.
Al-Masry Al-Youm published a report citing unnamed sources that the presidency had learned of a planned assassination of Al-Sisi should he attend the summit in Nouakchott.
The sources also claimed that this was not the first time Al-Sisi was threatened, and consequently, it was decided that he should not participate in the Summit which starts on Monday.
Sources in the presidency told Daily News Egypt that the next upcoming visit on the president’s agenda is attending the G20 Summit in China on 4-5 September.
