Hamdeen Sabahi, the Popular Current founder, has said he is a potential presidential candidate, yet explained that his nomination would depend on other candidates and their programmes, including Defence Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
In an interview with MBC Masr on Saturday, Sabahi signalled his readiness to support any other presidential candidate if this candidate has a programme that realises the January 2011 Revolution goals and there is consensus on that candidate.
Army chief Sisi has not confirmed or denied news of his running for president. Yet in response to the demands of attendees during an army seminar in Cairo earlier today, he said that if he runs for president then it will be at the request of the people.
Sabahi said he has no justification for competing against a candidate who adopts the revolution’s goals.
In the 2012 presidential elections, Sabahi came third after the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Mursi and Hosni Mubarak’s last Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq.
The former presidential candidate warned against the return of those he called the corrupt figures of Mubarak’s regime and the terrorists of Mursi’s rule to power.
He called on Egyptians to vote for the constitution in the imminent referendum, adding that he expects great approval on this newly-drafted constitution.
Egyptians will be casting their votes next Tuesday and Wednesday in the constitutional referendum after which there will be presidential and parliamentary elections, although it has not been decided yet which will come first.
