Spanish tourists rescued off Egypt’s Red Sea coast after yacht sinks

Nine Spanish tourists were rescued when their yacht sank in the Red Sea near Hurghada early on Friday, state news agency MENA reported.

The chairman of the Society for the Rescue and Protection of the Environment in the Red Sea, Hassan El-Tayeb, said the tourists were rescued in the El-Muwaieh area between Quseir and Safaga, south of Hurghada.

In a press statement, El-Tayeb said that the association sent rescue boats immediately after receiving an emergency alert and the tourists were rescued without any injuries.

The armed forces also dispatched boats and a helicopter to rescue the tourists, Al-Shorouk newspaper reported. Further details of the rescue operation were not immediately available.

The group were on a cruise to a diving area 80 miles south of Hurghada, Al-Shorouk reported.

The cause of the boat’s sinking was not identified.
